Introduction to the Purple Theory

The Purple Theory gives you the principles/fundamentals upon which all the tips on purplegolf.com are based - it is essentially our philosophy on the golf swing. At purplegolf.com we believe that there is a single figure golfer inside everyone and the Purple Theory is our blueprint to make it happen. So how does it work?

Well it is split into 8 sections – one for each position in the swing – and it will provide you with key checkpoints and common faults to look for in each position. Work your way through the sections by clicking on the silhouettes above and then compare the model positions to your own swing by uploading your swing in our Video Library.

Some of the Purple Theory may be a little different to what you have heard before but trust us, it is based on years of studying what the best players do so you can be sure that it works. You will find the theory is simple and easy to apply – we won’t tie you up in knots and we won’t have you doing boring drills until you’re your arms ache!

The Purple Theory is simple but it is also specific and practical so it really will help you improve your game. And what’s more, you will always know what we teach is based on what the top players are doing.

The cornerstone of our theory is that it is easy to understand and easy to apply to your game. We see too many people getting frustrated at the driving range trying all manner of intricate, mechanical movements and they invariably go home in a bad mood and as worse players. We want you to have fun when you play and to enjoy the game, but most of all we want you to really IMPROVE!

So what is the Purple Theory? Well it’s based on a couple of key themes;

1. Good Posture
Good balance is vital to being able to swing well and this comes from good posture. Getting your posture right is the single most important thing to get right if you want to improve your swing and to make your ball striking consistent. It helps you keep your weight in the same place throughout the swing rather than have it moving forwards and backwards during the swing.

You can make rapid and dramatic changes to your striking and ball flight just by changing your posture. Many people spend hours trying to correct faults in their swings when actually their poor posture is causing the faults and making the cures impossible to achieve. So we’ll show you how to get your posture right.

2. Swing Plane
Your swing plane is the second most important thing to get right. The simplest way to swing is to use a single swing plane throughout the swing. That plane is set by the angle of your club shaft at address. From there the club shaft should stay on or parallel to that plane throughout the whole swing. This is the simplest way to swing.

You will see these points mentioned in almost all of the sections of the Purple Theory but we really can’t stress enough how important they are. Get them right and you will have the foundations for a simple and powerful swing that will require little maintenance. Our goal for you is that when you’re on the course you are focusing on your targets, not your mechanics. If you don’t take it with you to the course, you’re not going to find it there, so keep the Purple Theory to the range!

At purplegolf.com we believe that most golf lessons simply don’t work because they fail to address these 2 fundamental themes. We’ve seen so many bad lessons up and down the country’s practice ranges and we’re fed up with it. How many times have you had a lesson and walked away confused and concerned and ultimately, no better player?

And how many times has your pro told you, ‘Well it will take you a while to get used to the new feelings’ as you scuttle your 10th shot in a row along the ground? This just isn’t good enough and it’s just lazy excuses for poor teaching. If you’re not balanced to start with then getting your right foot off the ground in the downswing isn’t going to cure your pulled iron shots. It’s band aiding and it doesn’t work. So let the Purple Theory show you a different way, one that gets things right from the start and one that makes an immediate impact on your game.

The Purple Theory utilises 2 viewpoints to analyse the swing – ‘down the line’ and ‘face on’. You should use these same perspectives to analyse your own swing. Upload your videos to our unique video analysis tool in the Video Library and use the blueprint in the Purple Theory as a reference point to see where you need to improve.

You should also use the Purple Theory if you want to put one of our Tips into context. You will find consistent themes running through them all.

It is important to regularly check your swing as it’s easy for bad habits – particularly in the set-up – to creep in and they will have a knock on effect on the rest of your swing. We recommend that you video your swing at least once a month during the season and use our video analysis tools to check that you’re on the right track.
