This page will show you how to get the best out of the functionality on purplegolf.com.
Shooting a Video
Use a mini DV or HD camcorder, a quality camera phone or a digital camera with video mode – any appliance with
video capability should work.
Set the device to ‘sports mode’ if it has the facility – this will increase the shutter speed of the video which will make frame by frame analysis in the purplegolf.com video player more effective. As a guide, you need a minimum of 1,000 frames per second to shoot a golf swing.
Video the swing from 2 angles – from ‘down the line’ (ie. from behind the player looking down the ball to target line) and from ‘face on’ (ie. from infront of the player). Ensure the whole swing is visible in the shot to facilitate effective analysis.
Uploading A Video
First upload your video to a PC or laptop using video editing software such as windows moviemaker or apple i-movie. This software will allow you to save just the couple of seconds of the swing which will minimise file size – important for quick uploads.
In the editing software get the clip to the set-up position just prior to takeaway. Then ‘capture’ the video (save it down) to your hard drive in a folder where it can easily be recalled.
Once the clip is saved to your hard drive it can be uploaded onto the site using the ‘upload a video’ page.
Simply browse your hard drive to find the file and give it a name and category so that it can be easily referenced on the site. Once uploaded, the clip can be analysed on the site until your heart is content!
Video Analysis
Use our bespoke purplegolf.com video player to review and analyse your video clips. To access the player go to the video library page on the site and select the desired clip from the library. The clip will then load into the player for viewing and analysing.
The player provides analysis tools which allow you to review the clip in detail. There is a step forward button which allows you to step
through the swing a frame at a time. There are also drawing tools (such as pencil, line and circles) which allow you to analyse specific elements of your swing.
There is a useful ‘personal notes’ page in the video library which is a good place to jot down thoughts and feelings from your practice sessions as
well as key learnings from the video and changes you intend to make for next time. The personal notes are private and not visible to other members on the site.
The notes will make an excellent reference tool for assessing progress made and changes over time.
Compare Swings
An extension of the Video Library is the ‘Compare Swings’ page and this allows you to view 2 clips side by side. This is an excellent tool for comparing old and new swings to assess changes, or for comparing your swing against that of a top tour professional in the pro library.
My Scores
The My Scores section of Mygolf allows you to track and assess your game by recording and analysing your performance in key areas. After each competitive round enter your scores and key stats through the ‘add new round’ facility in Mygolf. Either choose the relevant golf course or add the course if it is not currently in the database. Then enter your 18 scores plus fairways hit, greens in regulation, putts and sand saves.
Over time you will build up a bank of statistics which will show you where the strengths and weaknesses in your game lie. You can then use Myscores to set the agenda for your practice time and then to chart the improvements in your game.
